Janice Eileen Childs, age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Schnepp Senior Care and Rehab Center in St. Louis.

Janice was born on August 22, 1940, the daughter of Clarence and Gladys (Short) Hooks. On November 1, 1975, she married Robert Childs, and together they shared many years of love and family.

Janice was a woman of remarkable strength, perseverance, and determination. While raising seven children, she attended school full-time to earn her master’s degree in clinical psychology, all while working as a full-time teacher. During those demanding years, she faced one of life’s greatest challenges when she was diagnosed with cancer. Refusing to let it define her, Janice courageously battled the disease and ultimately became a four-time cancer survivor.

After earning her master’s degree and obtaining her certification as a testing psychologist, Janice dedicated a number of years to helping others through her work as a testing psychologist. Although illness eventually forced her to step away from the profession she loved, her compassion, resilience, and commitment to serving others remained an inspiration to all who knew her.

Janice is survived by her children, Evan (MiSuk) Childs, Phil Childs, Tracie (Doug) Hopkins, Robert (Betsy) Schultz, Michelle (Don) Wilson, Melissa (Dave) Hotopp, and Scott Schultz; her brother, Don (Sally) Hooks; several grandchildren; great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Gladys Hooks, and by her beloved husband, Robert Childs.

A memorial service celebrating Janice’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at First Congregational Church, 830 Wright Street, Breckenridge, Michigan 48615.
