Stanley Robert Guthrie

Stanley Robert Guthrie passed away peacefully at his home with his sister by his side on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Stanley was born August 5, 1946, the son of Fredrick and June (Bennett) Guthrie. At a young age, Stanley suffered from meningitis, which left him with several lifelong disabilities. But those challenges never defined Stanley. Instead, he lived a full and joyful life, touching countless people along the way with his smile, determination, and unmistakable personality.

Stanley was almost always smiling, and people simply felt better when he was around. Affectionately nicknamed “Trouble,” Stanley was known to answer anyone who called him by that name with a cheerful, “What’s up, Double Trouble?” His positive spirit and ability to bring happiness to others were among the many things that made Stanley so special.

Stanley was determined and hardworking throughout his life. He proudly earned his eighth-grade diploma from Deerfield Center School. In his younger years, he delivered groceries on his bike to residents in the town of Winn who had difficulty getting out to shop, an early example of the kindness and care for others that remained with him throughout his life.

He also loved being on the move. Stanley had a three-wheel bicycle that he loved to ride, and one summer he logged an incredible 700 miles on it just in the driveway.

Music brought Stanley great joy. He loved to sing, especially old country songs, and enjoyed performing with his sister and brother in their band, Midnight Express. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, watching Westerns, and anything Harley-Davidson.

More than anything, Stanley loved his family. He shared an especially close bond with his sister Pat, his longtime sidekick. Wherever one was, the other was rarely far away. Family was at the center of Stanley’s life, and the time he spent with those he loved meant everything to him.

Stanley is survived by his sister, Patricia Guthrie (Alvin Grace); brother, Allen Guthrie (Julie Guthrie); special friend, Carolann; nine nieces and nephews, Eva (Matt), Jamie (Austin), Eleta, James (Becky), Amy, Mark, Stacey (John), Jennifer (Cory), and Brooke (Blake); along with several great-nieces and great-nephews, other family members, and many close friends.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Jr Guthrie; and niece, Lisa K. Guthrie.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Stanley’s Life will be held Saturday, October 17th, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Winn Community Center.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Berry Funeral Home, Shepherd.
