Walter Roy Nichols, age 84, of St. Louis, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2026, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Alma. Walt was born June 14, 1942, the son of William “Harvey” and Neva (Brown) Nichols.
Walt was a hard worker who enjoyed the simple things in life. He worked in the construction industry(mason brick cutter mostly)for over 40 years. He loved deer hunting and gardening and was especially well known for the tomatoes he grew in his vegetable garden. He also enjoyed canning and had a taste for spicy food, both making it and eating it.
Walt loved to cook and barbecue for his family and friends. His baked beans were always a favorite at every occasion. Around Christmas time, his fudge, peanut butter balls, cookies and rum balls were especially popular and became a treat that family and friends looked forward to each year.
When he wasn’t working in the garden or cooking something up in the kitchen, Walt enjoyed doing puzzles and watching the Detroit Tigers in his later years.
Walt married Sue Ann Troyer on March 19, 1973, and together they shared more than 53 years of marriage.
Walt is survived by his wife, Sue; three children, Julie Cooper, Dave Hadley, and Terry (Holly) Nichols; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Harvey” Nichols and Neva Brown ; grandson, Dustin Cooper; and siblings, Linda Jewell, Sandy Rowse, Brenda Daniels, William Nichols, and Sharon Troyer.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the St. Louis Church of Christ on Sunday, October 11 at 2 p.m. with Gary Lemert officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Berry Funeral Home of Shepherd.
