Late Tuesday night, December 23, 2025, Shepherd lost a true legend. John Harris passed away, leaving behind a legacy that shaped generations of students, athletes, and community members. He was born July 6, 1935 the son of Thomas and Aletha (Hatton) Croton.

John was a devoted husband, father, educator, and coach whose influence extended far beyond the classroom and wrestling mat. He is survived by his beloved wife Kay Harris; his daughter Dr. Jodi (Harris) Stevens; and his son-in-law Don Stevens. He is also survived by his sister Karen Quinn; nephews Matt (Stephanie) Rodenbo and Tom (Sheryl) Rodenbo; and his niece Sue Stump. Also surviving John is his trusted friend, Rick Bullard, and the many wrestlers who proudly considered him a mentor, role model, and second father.

John is preceded by both his parents; and his four brothers Jerry Harris, Frank Harris, Scott Croton, and Rick Croton.

An outstanding educator and coach, John believed deeply that his wrestlers were his sons. He taught them far more than technique and competition. He taught toughness, accountability, integrity, and how to live with purpose. His impact was measured not only in wins and championships, but in lives changed. John was deeply charitable and selfless, often saying that his only regret in life was not being a billionaire so he could help even more people.

No one was ever a stranger to John. He had a rare ability to capture a room with his sharp wit, cutting humor, and infectious energy. Conversations with John were memorable, meaningful, and often unforgettable. An avid golfer, he found joy on the course and cherished time spent with his dogs, who were a constant source of companionship and comfort.

John Harris improved the lives of everyone he knew. His legacy lives on in the countless students he taught, the athletes he coached, the colleagues he inspired, and the family and friends who loved him. John loved his Shepherd community and through a lifetime of love and devotion made his mark felt.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no services per John’s wishes. Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Shepherd Sports Booster Club (Shepherd High School, 100 E Hall Ave., Shepherd, MI 48883). Arrangements have been entrusted to Berry Funeral Home of Shepherd.
