Bernice Irene Smith, age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Bernice was born on April 9, 1933, the daughter of Hugh and Clarice (Curtiss) Winnie. She dedicated more than 30 years of her life to caring for others as a home healthcare aide. Outside of her work, Bernice found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid reader who loved crocheting, spending time outdoors, taking scenic color tours each fall, and cherished the companionship of her beloved dog, Baxter.
Bernice is survived by her children, Gary Smith of Mount Pleasant, Mary Lou (Dan Baker) Denslow of Lansing, Katherine Snider of Mecosta, Terry Smith of Shepherd, Karen (Duncan) Wernette of Dimondale, Ron Smith of Hemlock, and Barb (Bud) Stevens of Blanchard. She also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Jim Winnie of Mount Pleasant and Gene Winnie of Columbiaville, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Smith; her parents; her great-granddaughter, Devon Denslow; her sister, Marjorie Brecht; her daughter-in-law, Susan Smith; and her sons-in-law, Lucky Snyder and David Denslow.
A memorial service for Bernice will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the First Baptist Church of Vestaburg, with Pastor Dan Palmer officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Berry Funeral Home of Shepherd.
